AI Can Now Design Biology. What Should We Let It Create?
Something remarkable just happened at the intersection of AI and synthetic biology.
Scientists have used generative AI to design entire viral genomes from scratch.
The researchers trained genome language models to generate novel bacteriophage genomes. After experimental testing, several AI-designed phages were found to be functional and capable of infecting and killing E. coli — including bacteria resistant to some natural phages.
This is more than AI predicting a protein structure.
It is a shift from:
